This is the story of another another viral TikTok craze that I somewhat wanted to despise but couldn’t quite bring myself to do so. but they didn’t. It’s not that I didn’t believe the concept was enticing in the first place. It’s just that everything felt a little too straightforward. It goes without saying that cooking a block of feta with bursting tomatoes would be delicious. Is it, however, good enough to bring down the internet? Yes, I must admit, is my reluctant response. It’s a stroke of genius.

My ideas are summarized here.

This is a trend that I will definitely get behind, despite the fact that I am not very fashionable (and do not even have a TikTok account). I should not have waited so long before giving it a go. Everybody else seems to be infatuated with it, and I am no exception! Because of its growing popularity, feta is no longer in low supply, which means you shouldn’t have to worry about running out of the cheese anytime soon.

  • Do not use crumbled feta! In this dish, block feta cheese is the only way to go. You don’t want any of that powdery covering on the block, and the whole thing will stand up much better during roasting. Also avoid low-fat feta, which will not melt as well and will not taste as wonderful as regular feta. Don’t scrimp on the extra virgin olive oil. This is critical since we want a thick sauce and not dry pasta
  • Don’t be shy with the tomato sauce. A lot of fresh taste and a mild sweetness are brought to this dish to balance out the sharpness. Make use of two boxes rather than simply one
  • Cook pasta until it is about al dente to achieve the nicest texture. When the pasta is stirred with the heated sauce, it will soak it up and become a little softer. TikTok’s viral baked feta pasta is worth the hype

My immediate reaction to viral culinary moments ranges from extreme skepticism (such as the tortilla “hack”) to outright disgust (such as the ketchup “hack”) (mermaid toast). Baked feta pasta, the newest social media craze to hit the airways, is an oddity in that I was a believer from the beginning. It’s a simple dish for spaghetti with tomatoes and cheese that everyone will like — what’s not to like? Tiiu Piret published a version of the recipe on her blog in February 2018, but it is Jenni Hayrinen, a fellow Finnish blogger, who is credited with making uunifetapasta (Finnish for “oven-baked feta pasta”) popular in her nation after sharing her simpler version a year later.

Smith’s single video has received approximately 3 million views, and the hashtag #bakedfetapasta has had a total of 52 million views and counting on TikTok as of this writing.

There are just minimal variances in taste depending on the recipe you choose to use.

What is Feta Pasta?

Baked Feta spaghetti is a fantastic method to make a delicious pasta sauce. In a casserole dish, bake a block of feta cheese with tomatoes, garlic, extra virgin olive oil, and a pinch of salt and pepper until the cheese is melted. As soon as the tomatoes begin to burst and the cheese begins to melt, remove the dish from the oven and mash the cheese into a creamy pasta sauce that is infused with olive oil and juicy tomatoes.

The asparagus and roasted tomatoes are a highlight of our Baked Creamy Feta pasta with tomatoes and asparagus recipe, which we created since my daughter adores them and my son is a sucker for roasted tomatoes.

Origin of Feta Pasta

This year’s Baked Feta pasta frenzy was founded byTiiu Piret andLiemessa, two Finnish bloggers who started it all. Liemessa’s recipe was later copied in the United States byGrilled Cheese Social, whose video went viral on TikTok and quickly became a popular viral trend.

Ingredients for Baked Feta Pasta

  • Tomatoes –cherry or grape tomatoes work nicely
  • Asparagus– we included it to provide extra vegetables, but you may leave it out if you like
  • Olive oil– an extra virgin olive oil provides the greatest taste
  • Because the cheese is naturally salty, a little salt and pepper goes a long way in this dish. It is ideal to use feta cheese that has been cut into blocks, since this will give you the creamiest consistency. Greek or French Feta cheese is somewhat creamier but USA Feta manufactured from cow’s milk also works excellent
  • Pasta– short pasta is simpler to incorporate in (see our favorite kinds below)
  • 1/4 cup parsley or fresh chopped basil can be substituted for the full 1/4 cup. Garlic: half should be added while baking, and the remainder should be added as soon as the dish is taken out of the oven.

The Best Pasta to Use

Short pasta is used for feta pasta because it is much simpler to mix and incorporate with the cheese sauce than long spaghetti. Use little more than 8 to 10 ounces or the sauce will be overwhelmed. A few of our favorite alternatives are as follows.

How to Make Baked Feta Pasta

It doesn’t get any easier than this recipe. Your vegetables and sauce bake together in the oven while your pasta cooks on the stovetop, and then you combine them all together to create an excellent baked Feta Pasta dish.

  1. Prepare the vegetables: In a 9-by-13-inch casserole dish, mix the tomatoes, asparagus, 1/3 cup olive oil, half of the minced garlic, salt, and pepper, and set aside. Toss the ingredients together to form a space in the center. Place an 8-ounce block of feta cheese in the center of the plate and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon olive oil and some freshly ground black pepper. Bake for 30 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit, or until the tomatoes begin to burst. Bake for 30 minutes, then start boiling your pasta in a pot of salted water until al dente according to the package directions, about midway through the baking time. 1/2 cup of the heated pasta water should be set aside. Cook for a further 5 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the oil has been absorbed by the tomatoes. Remove from oven and stir in finely chopped parsley and remaining minced garlic. Add the spaghetti– rinse the pasta and mix it with the hot cheesy sauce until everything is well combined.

Pro Tip: To make the spaghetti creamier or saucier, add heated pasta water until the desired consistency is achieved by adding the pasta water. If the water begins to cool, reheat it in the microwave until it is blazing hot again.

Common Questions:

Is it possible to add protein to feta pasta? You may substitute chicken tenders for the asparagus if you want. My sister made this dish with a pound of chicken tenders, which she roasted in the same pan as the cheese and tomatoes for added flavor. Is it possible to use something else in place of the tomatoes? I do not advocate replacing tomatoes since the liquid from the tomatoes contributes to the sauce’s flavor. So far, we haven’t come across anything that compares to tomatoes in terms of effectiveness.

After hearing about Finnish blogger Liemessa’s popular meal, I created this feta tomato pasta recipe and shared it with you in 2019. I wanted to provide an English translation of her dish, which quickly became popular on my Instagram and is now available on tiktok!   • Pasta may be made in any form you like! Bow ties and orzo are two of my favorite foods. Feta- for the greatest results, use a block of feta cheese. Crumbled feta works as well, although it doesn’t melt as elegantly as whole feta. Cherry tomatoes are the finest choice, although grape tomatoes are also acceptable. What’s even nicer is that they’re somewhat wilted and aged. They enhance the sweetness of the meal. Fresh garlic is very recommended, in my opinion. not the pre-chopped, processed sort that you can buy at the grocery store
  • Basil- fresh basil is preferred, but you may also use rosemary or thyme if you don’t have any on hand. Salt- Kosher salt is the finest choice for this dish, however pink Himalayan salt might also be used. Chili Powder- the original recipe calls for chiles, but I substituted red pepper flakes instead because I usually have these on hand
  • Olive Oil- Any type of olive oil will suffice! Just make sure you don’t scrimp on the olive oil
  • You want the tomatoes to be swimming in it.

How to make the Feta with Tomatoes

Baked feta is one of my all-time favorite recipes to prepare! I used to make this pasta as an appetizer, along with crusty bread and crackers, before I started eating it regularly. Now that I’ve gotten my hands on some spaghetti, forget about it! This is the only thing I’m going to do from now on! The nice part is that the technique remains the same! At begin, preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, in a baking dish, combine the cherry tomatoes with the olive oil, salt, and pepper.

  1. Once everything is baked for 30 minutes, heat the oven to 450 degrees and bake for another 5-10 minutes, or until the feta is golden and the tomatoes have burst, until everything is done.
  2. Remove the baking dish from the oven and toss in the garlic and basil until well combined.
  3. This is also the time of year when your entire kitchen will begin to smell delicious!
  4. It’s time to serve the meal if the sauce is properly creamy.
  5. That’s all there is to it!

Tips and Tricks

THE SIZE OF THE BAKING DISH IS IMPORTANT- Make sure you use a tiny baking dish so that the tomatoes are crammed together and touching each other. This will aid in the confiting of the tomatoes and their transformation into their most delectable selves! WHEN IS IT TOO DRY? – If you discover that your baked feta pasta is too dry, simply add 12 cup of starchy pasta water to the pan. If the mixture is still too dry, add another 12 cup and stir well. FULL FAT FTW- Yes, reduced fat feta will work, but the full fat kind will be the most flavorful!

Don’t be concerned, it will continue to function!

THE VEGAN WAY TO MAKE IT: Follow the recipe exactly as written, but do not add the vegan feta until the last 5-10 minutes of baking time, otherwise it will melt and spatter all over your oven.

DIFFERENT SIZES OF PASTA- I personally prefer orzo for this, but you could use rigatoni, fettuccine, radiatori, or pretty much any other form you wish!

  • 2 pinches red pepper flakes
  • 1 handful fresh basil leaves
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 pound bowtie pasta
  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Toss the tomatoes, olive oil, and salt in a baking dish until well combined. Place the feta block in the center of the plate and drizzle with a little extra olive oil and a couple pinches of red pepper flakes on top. Preheat the oven to 300°F and bake for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, cook the bowtie pasta until al dente according to package directions, then drain, reserving some of the pasta water for later. After 30 minutes, increase the heat to 450 degrees and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes, or until the feta and tomatoes are browned. The garlic and basil should be added immediately after the baking dish has been taken out of the oven. The remaining heat from the tomatoes and olive oil will soften the raw edge of the garlic
  • But, the raw edge will remain. Add in the drained al dente pasta and toss one more to combine the ingredients. Taste and season with salt and pepper to your liking! (Additionally, if the sauce is too thick, add 14 cup pasta water and stir to soften it up!

It works best if you use a small baking dish so that the tomatoes are in close proximity to one another. If the pasta is still dry after cooking, add 12 cup pasta water and mix well to combine. More notes can be found in the Tips and Tricks section above. xoxo, GCS
