  • Otherwise, it will taste bland. A dash of olive oil and vinegar to your pasta salad can help it retain its moisture if it has been sitting for a long period of time. It is possible to swap the vinaigrette with your favorite Italian dressing if desired.

  • With the addition of mixed dry herbs, my Creamy Pasta Salad recipe achieves the ideal balance of tanginess and sweetness. A simple cold spaghetti salad has never tasted so good—and it can be made in just 20 minutes. No idea about you, but after the past year, I am READY to get outside and grill, picnic, and have a good time. You’re with me, aren’t you?” The time has come for another of my favorite potluck dishes. What’s not to like about creamy pasta salad? We’re talking about soft pasta tossed with a creamy, acidic, herby dressing and a colorful assortment of veggies to make a satisfying meal. I almost forgot to mention that I also use pepperoni and cheese in my pasta salad. These are excellent additions. A hearty pasta salad, which I have to say has served as my lunch on more than one occasion. Let’s be honest: the dressing is the most important part of any pasta salad, don’t you think? When the pasta and vegetables are dressed with the dressing, they come to life! Even the pickiest eaters seem to appreciate this pasta salad, which I have discovered to be true over the years. Check out what’s coming after that! I’ll be speaking about the following topics.

Creamy pasta salad ingredients

These are the ingredients that I use, but the recipe may be modified to suit your needs. Feel free to modify the recipe by adding or removing items to your desire.

Best pasta for pasta salad

I use elbow macaroni for my cold pasta salad, which is the traditional way to make it. Italini, fusilli, farfalle, and penne are some of the other pastas that would make excellent substitutes.

Vegetables for pasta salad

Green bell pepper, celery, and red onion are some of the vegetables I utilize. Make changes based on what you and your family like!

Meats for pasta salad

Pepperoni is one of my favorite toppings because its spiciness provides a little bite that pairs well with the acidic dressing. Substitutes such as salami, summer sausage, or even cubed ham would be excellent choices.

Cheese for pasta salad

I found medium cheddar cubes on a site and chopped them into cubes. Compared to any other pre-shredded or pre-cubed cheese, freshly cut cheese has a stronger taste, in my view.

Creamy pasta salad dressing

Mayonnaise is the starting point for my creamy pasta salad. Replace Miracle Whip with anything else: that stuff is horrible (at least in my opinion), it isn’t actually mayonnaise, and it is far too sweet for this salad dressing.

I use vinegar to give it a little tang and sugar to give it a little sweetness. I also use herbs and spices such as onion powder, salt and pepper, as well as a blend of Italian herbs in the recipe.

How to make pasta salad

Putting this salad together takes no more than 20 minutes or less. The following is the sequence in which I prepare the pasta salad:

Start cooking the pasta

Whatever type of pasta you pick, make sure to cook it according to the package directions to ensure that it is totally soft. Pasta salads are not the proper setting for al dente pasta. Make sure to check the pasta before draining it; you may discover that you need to cook it even longer than the package specifies in order to get the desired softness. Upon completion of the pasta cooking process to your satisfaction, drain and rinse well with cold water for a few minutes.

How to make creamy pasta salad dressing

During the time that the pasta is cooking, begin preparing the pasta salad dressing. Think of how simple it is: simply combine all of the dressing ingredients in a large mixing dish and whisk until creamy. BOOM! DONE!

Chop, cube, and cut all the veggies, cheese, and meats

To begin, cube the cheese into approximately 12-inch squares. Add the cubes to the dressing in a large mixing bowl and swirl well, making sure that they are covered on all sides. Using this method, the cheese will not clump together! Do the same thing with your pepperoni: we don’t want those delectable bits of goodness to clump together either. Chop the remaining vegetables and add them to the dressing in a large mixing basin. Combine thoroughly.

Add the cooked pasta

Make absolutely certain that your cooled pasta has been well drained. We don’t want a watery pasta salad, thank you very much! In a large mixing bowl, combine the pasta with the dressing, vegetables, cheese, and pepperoni. Add the spaghetti a third at a time. Before adding more spaghetti, make sure everything is properly combined. Adding the cooked pasta to the dressing and veggie mixture is the next step. Keep in mind that I’ve used a variety of various pasta shapes here because I had some pasta scraps to use up!

Simply store in the refrigerator in an airtight container until you’re ready to serve at a potluck, barbecue, or picnic.

Make ahead pasta salad

If you have chilled pasta, be certain that it has been thoroughly drained. This isn’t the time for a dripping pasta salad. In a large mixing basin, combine the pasta with the dressing, vegetables, cheese, and pepperoni. Stir well. Before adding any additional spaghetti, make sure everything is completely combined. Cooked pasta should be combined with the dressing and veggie mixture. Remember that I used a variety of different pasta shapes here since I had some leftover spaghetti to use up! Then it’s just a matter of chilling the salad before presenting it to guests.

How long does pasta salad last in the fridge?

It will last 3–5 days if you keep it refrigerated in an airtight container, which is the quickest response.

If the salad is left out at your gathering (gross! ), I wouldn’t recommend putting it back in the refrigerator afterward. So keep it as cool as possible! Of course, if your nose indicates that something is “wrong” about the salad, PAY ATTENTION. It should be thrown out immediately.

How much pasta salad per person?

Assuming that this pasta salad would be served as a side dish, a serving size of 34 cup per person is appropriate. Due to the large amount of vegetables, pepperoni, and cheese in the salad, the actual cooked pasta quantity is probably closer to 12 cup per person rather than 1 cup. Considering that a standard 1-pound box of pasta generates 8 cups of cooked pasta, one box should be plenty to feed around 16 people. However, because this pasta salad is so delectable, I’d guess that it will serve closer to 12–14 people.

This salad is simple to prepare and may be prepared a day or even two ahead of time.

What goes well with pasta salad?

A creamy pasta salad goes nicely with just about everything that comes off the grill. Here are a handful of our favorites:

  • Sandwiches made with grilled Italian sausage and pepper-onion foil packets
  • Grilled Ribeye Steaks with Caramelized Onions and Mushrooms
  • Grilled Ribeye Steaks with Caramelized Onions and Mushrooms

  • The following recipes are also available: Chimichurri Pasta Salad, Easy, Zippy Coleslaw, Traditional* Potato Salad, and Tangy 3-Bean Salad.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound pasta (see Recipe Note1 for measurements)
  • 1 big red onion (about 1 12 cups), roughly chopped
  • 1. 1 big (about 1 cup) green bell pepper, coarsely chopped 3 celery ribs (about 1 cup), finely chopped
  • 3 carrots, finely diced
  • Cubed cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 4 oz pepperoni (optional)
  • 4 oz shredded mozzarella cheese (optional)

FOR THE DRESSING

  • Recipe calls for 1 12 cup mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons rice vinegar, 14 cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon onion powder, and 2 tablespoons herby spice mix (see Recipe Note2 for details). 12 teaspoon coarse salt (plus additional salt for seasoning pasta water), or to taste 12 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, or more or less to taste

Instructions

  1. Bring a large saucepan of well-seasoned water to a rolling boil. Cook the pasta according to the package directions (see Recipe Note3)
  2. Drain well. In the meantime, prepare the dressing by combining all of the ingredients in a large food storage container and mixing thoroughly. Mix the cheese cubes into the dressing, making sure that each piece is well coated on both sides with the dressing. Repeat the process with the pepperoni. In a large mixing bowl, combine the veggies
  3. When the pasta is through cooking, drain and rinse well with cold water for several minutes
  4. Add approximately half of the pasta and combine thoroughly. Toss in the remaining spaghetti (see Recipe Note3) until everything is well combined. Make sure to chill the dish for at least an hour before serving.

Notes

  1. I prefer elbow macaroni, penne, or a combination of the two. When using mixed pasta, make a note of any changes in cooking time that may exist. Because you don’t want overcooked pasta to be combined with underdone pasta, my current favorite seasoning blend is Sunny Paris from Penzey’s Spices. Ingredients include shallots, chives, green peppercorns, dill leaves, basil, tarragon, chervil, and bay leaf, among other things. However, any seasoning blend will suffice in this case. I would merely advise staying away from anything that involves a lot of oregano, as it may be overbearing
  2. Some people want more sauce in their pasta salad, which I understand. By including the first half of the pasta and thoroughly mixing it in, then gradually incorporating the remaining pasta, you not only guarantee that the spaghetti is well coated, but you may also use less pasta if that is your desire.
