Barilla is a multinational food corporation based in Italy. It is the largest producer of pasta in the world.
History
Pietro Barilla Sr. began the firm in 1877 as a bakery store in Parma, Italy, and expanded from there. A new pasta plant, equipped with a “continuous baking” oven, was opened by Barilla in 1910, marking the company’s expansion since 1908. Upon the death of Pietro Barilla Sr., his sons Riccardo and Gualtiero assumed control of the family business, expanding both production and distribution of products as a result of technological advancements that allowed the company to rapidly transform itself into the most important bread and pasta company in Emilia-Romagna during the period between the 1920s and 1930s.
- In 1947, Riccardo passed away, and the administration of the company passed to his sons Pietro and Gianni, who represented the third generation of the company.
- Due to the high quality of its products, the fairness of its pricing, and its ability to innovate, such as the use of cardboard for pasta packaging, Barilla swiftly changed itself from a regional firm to a corporation with a significant presence throughout Northern Italy during those years.
- W.
- Grace, an American chemical business, bought a controlling position in the corporation in 1971 after the Barilla family retained ownership.
- Pietro regained ownership of the firm in 1979, and it has been privately held ever since.
- It was as a result of this that the fourth Barilla generation was born, and throughout the 1990s, under the leadership of Pietro, the company continued the process of internationalization that had begun at the beginning of the decade.
- Its development was furthered by the acquisition of a number of international food firms, including the MISKOpasta company in Greece (1991), the Turkish pasta companyFiliz Makarna (1994), the Swedish crispbread producerWasabröd (1999), and a joint venture with the Mexican Herdez in 2002.
- After purchasing the German firm Kamps AG in 2002, Barilla sold it to the CzechAgrofertin 2013, with the exception of the soft bread brand Harrys, which remains part of the Barilla Group.
- Since December 2013, the firm has built two restaurants (“Casa Barilla”) in the United States, in order to establish a more direct interaction with its American customers: the first was in New York, and the second was in California.
Overview
For more than 143 years, the Barilla family has presided over the company’s operations. Among the trademarks controlled by the Barilla Group are Barilla (a multinational pasta manufacturer), Cucina Barilla, Mulino Bianco, Gran Cereale, Pan di Stelle, Pavesi and Voiello (all in Italy), Harrys (in France and Sweden), MISKO (in Greece and Turkey), Filiz Makarna (in Turkey), Casa Barilla (in the United States), Yemina (in Mexico), and Vesta (in Mexico). - Barilla brand pasta is available in a variety of restaurants across the world, including those affiliated with thePastamaniachain.
- It has become the world’s top maker of flatbread (a Scandinavian staple) following its acquisition of the Swedish business Wasa.
- Although the firm offers its pasta in the United States as having an Italian flavor (“An Italian Favorite” marketing), the majority of the product sold in the country is actually manufactured in Iowa or New York rather than Italy.
- Its production facilities are located in Italy as well as in Greece, France, Germany, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Turkey, the United States (in Iowa and New York), Mexico and Canada.
- Mills are also operated by the corporation in Italy, Greece, Sweden, Turkey, the United States, and Canada.
- These include Austria; Belgium; France; Germany; Greece; the Netherlands; Poland; Russia; Slovenia; Sweden; Switzerland; Turkey; and the United States; as well as Mexico; Brazil; Australia; and Japan Euro Food Brands Ltd.
- In Italy, Barilla has manufacturing plants in Parma, Foggia, Marcianise, Castiglione delle Stiviere, Cremona, Melfi, Rubiano, Novara, Muggia, and Ascoli Piceno, among other locations.
- The location of the pasta factory is indicated on the box by a code letter, but items manufactured in Italy are clearly branded as such.
- In 2019, the firm had a revenue of €3.627 billion and a net profit of 227 million euros, according to the Financial Times.
For the fiscal year 2020, the company’s revenue was €3.890 billion (a 7% rise over the previous year), and its net profit was € 351 million (a 55 percent increase over the previous year).
Other activities
The Barilla Historical Archive was established in 1987, at the initiative of Pietro Barilla, to collect, preserve, and enrich the company’s historical record, which dates back to 1877 and continues to the present day. The archive is located at the Barilla plant in Pedrignano, near Parma, and it contains over 60.000 documents organized by sector. It also contains documentation produced by the brands that were later incorporated into the company, such as Voiello, Mulino Bianco, Pavesi, Filiz, Wasa, and Harry’s, among others.
- The new website is available in several languages.
- Museimpresa is a very useful place for meetings, exchanges of experiences, and the sharing of knowledge, and the Barilla Historical Archive was among the founding partners in 2001.
- Both the Pasta Museum and the Tomato Museum, both of which are housed in the same Corte di Giarola, are included in the Province of Parma’s circuit of food museums.
- Some people asked for a boycott of Barilla goods in 2013, following statements made by the company’s chairman, Guido Barilla, about his opposition to homosexual adoption and his refusal to feature gay families in his commercials.
- Barilla produced a Spotify playlist in 2021 that had tunes that were exactly long enough to make the ideal pasta.
- In addition to the Italian national basketball team on multiple occasions, the corporation has sponsored racing car driver Alex Zanardi on a few times as well.
Furthermore, Barilla is presently the primary sponsor of the American alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin as well as the tennis star Cori Gauff, among other athletes.

Upon being questioned about the proactive role Faithful+Gould played, a Barilla representative provided the following explanation: “The risk workshop for our Avon project proved to be an extremely effective method of involving all project parties from the very beginning of the activity and raising awareness of potential issues and risks among the entire group. Undoubtedly, one of the most important factors that contributed to the successful outcome of the seminar was the fact that it effectively involved local authorities, energy suppliers, and other consultants, all of whom were asked to provide their input and raise potential concerns about various aspects of the project.

- What if, on the other hand, there existed a form of gold that was available to everyone?
- Consider the fact that this gold is consumable.
- Pasta.
- Throughout Italy, the golden hue of pasta fills restaurants and homes, with no need for special safes to keep it safe.
- After spending some time in the Emilia Romagna area of Italy, I paid a visit to Barilla, a pasta manufacturer that is well-known for its pasta skills.
- As previously said, pasta first arrived in Italy many years before Barilla was founded.
- Manual manufacture, which included drying the noodles in the open air, was still in use in Italy until the early twentieth century.
It wasn’t until 1933, more than 50 years after Barilla founded his company in 1877, that the first pasta machine was developed, and that pasta manufacture began to change.
Barilla, as the world’s greatest buyer of durum wheat and owner of the world’s largest mill, based near Parma, maintains a comprehensive approach to its most important product, durum wheat.
Given that every pasta in Italy must be prepared from durum wheat, Barilla pays close attention to the country’s 120 durum wheat variations, choosing only traditional breeds from among the 120 kinds available.
After the semolina and water are combined, the mixture is kneaded in order to activate the proteins.
Pasta forms such as penne and tagliatelle, among others, are produced by machine.
Upon strolling around the Barilla facility, I noticed that there was gold stacked high in apparently every container and flowing through nearly every machine.
It is a mounded mound of durum wheat in which the proteins have been fully activated and as a result, the delicate forms are criss-crossed on the plate. This is where the value of pasta lies: in the understanding of the noodles.

On October 19, 2007, Barilla launched a pasta processing factory and distribution center in Avon, New York, in the United States. The complex, which is spread across 49 acres, includes a 110,000ft2 pasta production factory as well as a 205,000ft2 distribution center. The mill, which is located 23 miles south of Rochester and 50 miles east of Buffalo, produces 81,000 metric tons of pasta every year (as of July 2009). Barilla, an Italian firm with more than 130 years of experience in the food sector, is the world’s largest pasta maker and one of the world’s most respected brands.
- According to Barilla, the increasing market share of its goods prompted the business to establish a new pasta producing plant in the city of Milan.
- The location of the factory in Avon was chosen because of its convenient access to railways and major highways.
- A total of $96.2 million was required for the project.
- Jacobson Warehouse Company, Barilla’s logistics partner, was in charge of all aspects of the warehouse’s operations, from the beginning of construction to the end of it’s daily operations.
- This project was recognized in 2007 with the ‘Design Build Institute of America Industrial Project Over $25 Million Merit Award’, and in 2008, it was recognized with the ‘Food Engineering Magazine Food Plant of the Year Award’
Barilla pasta processing plant project
Barilla announced its plans to build a new pasta processing factory and distribution center on March 10, 2006, and the company broke construction on the project in June of the same year. Over 350 individuals of the Avon community contributed to the completion of the project, which was finished on October 19th of 2007. There are around 140 employees employed at the site. It is estimated that Barilla has more than 130 years of experience in the food sector and is the world’s largest pasta maker.
In addition to Barilla’s personal investment, the project received support from the local county as well as state officials in the state of New York.
Jacobson is responsible for all aspects of the warehouse’s operation, including the original building, maintenance, hiring, and supervision of its employees.
The plant began producing pasta in June 2007, and it is now fully operational. By June 2009, the factory had reached full operating capacity, thanks to the installation of further capacity to the facility.
Pasta processing plant construction
An approximately 90-foot-tall semolina tower has been created, which has a capacity of 1.76 million pounds of semolina, which is a main component used in the production of pasta. There is enough room for four production lines in the factory. Initially, just two manufacturing lines were erected; however, as the demand for the product rose over the following several years, the third and fourth production lines were added to meet the rising demand. A few energy-saving measures were also adopted as part of the project, including the installation of lighting sensors in the warehouse, which ensured that lights were only turned on when motion was detected.
Side windows were constructed in large expanses on both sides of the building.
Barilla plant contractors
“More than 350 people of the Avon community have shown support for the initiative.” Faithful+Gould provided project management consulting services for the project. Construction management was handled by Whiting-Turner, with TranSystems providing architectural and structural engineering services. A team of Italian machine and production line builders was brought in to help with the development of the facility’s manufacturing lines. Engineers from M/E Engineering were responsible for providing electrical and mechanical engineering services.
Ricciarelli provided the case packing machinery, while Zucchini provided the end-of-line case packaging.
was responsible for the provision of the handling system.
The roofing system was provided by Carlisle SynTec.
Barilla pasta processing plant technology
Rockwell Automation performed total automation of the facility utilizing an integrated architecture approach and a variety of technologies, which was developed in-house. The Allen-Bradley Logix control platform delivers the high performance an application demands in a simple-to-use environment while maintaining a low cost of ownership. The Allen-Bradley PanelView HMI is the electronic operator interface, which also serves as the visual terminal, while the Allen-Bradley PowerFlex drives are smoothly incorporated into the integrated design and provide reliable performance.
In addition to providing more flexible control of plant systems, standardised controls make system administration and maintenance easier for plant engineers to manage and maintain systems.
Now, real-time management information and data can be delivered, assisting in the fulfillment of regulatory requirements and meeting business requirements. All in all, this was a scalable control solution for a fast expanding company’s needs.
Pasta processing
The flour that arrives at the plant is first examined and tested in a laboratory to ensure that it is of high quality. Before the flour cargoes are unloaded into the silos, they are tagged to ensure that they are correctly identified. Offloading is accomplished by the use of a pneumatic system. The flour is handled mechanically from this point on and is delivered to the kneading equipment. The code keeps track of how many loads have been made.

The 5 most popular Italian pasta brands worldwide
In this article, we will discuss the five most popular Italian pasta brands in the world, because the food section would be incomplete without mentioning one of the most traditional products of our country, which also happens to be the national emblem of Italy. Pasta embodies both innovation and tradition, as well as history and flavor, and it is the most widely exported food product on the planet. There are around two hundred drawing machines and more than a hundred pasta companies in the country.
Italy is famous for its pasta, much as the United Kingdom is recognized for its fish and chips, the United States is known for its hamburgers, and Germany is known for its sausages.
The 5 most popular Italian pasta brands worldwide
The company Barilla is at the top of the list. Pietro Barilla began the firm in 1877 as a bakery in Parma, Italy, and expanded from there. His descendants, the three brothers Guido, Luca, and Paolo Barilla, continue to lead the firm in his stead today. The Barilla group manufactures a wide variety of pasta products and is the world’s largest pasta manufacturer (40-45 percent of the Italian market and 25 percent of the US market). Barilla manufactures a wide variety of pasta in a variety of sizes.
The firm sells its pasta in the United States, and the wheat it uses is primarily sourced from the region.
Barilla group all around the world
The Barilla group has a number of facilities across the world, including those in Italy, Greece, France, Germany, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Turkey, Mexico, and the United States, to name a few (in Ames, Iowa and Avon, New York). Aside from Italy and Greece, the corporation also owns mills in Sweden, Turkey, and the United States.
Despite the fact that the company’s headquarters are in Parma, it has offices in a number of other countries such as Austria; Belgium; France; Germany; Greece; the Netherlands; Poland; Russia; Slovenia; Sweden; Switzerland; Turkey; and the United States; as well as Mexico; Brazil; and Australia.
2) De Cecco
The second company on the list is De Cecco, which was formed in 1886 in the little town of Fara San Martino, in the province of Abruzzi, by the brothers De Cecco (central Italy). Prior to establishing the firm, Nicola De Cecco used to grind wheat in his stone mill to supplement his income. In 1908, the firm used a picture of a little girl clutching a heap of wheat as its emblem. It was restored after World War II after being completely destroyed by German bombing during the previous conflict.
Near the 1980s, a new production facility was erected in Fara San Martino, effectively doubling the company’s output.
Since 2013, De Cecco has ranked third among the world’s pasta producers.
3) Divella
It is De Cecco that comes in at number two on the list, having been created in 1886 in the little town of Fara San Martino, in the province of Abruzzi, by the brothers De Cecco (central Italy). Before establishing the plant, Nicola De Cecco used to mill wheat in his stone mill, which he had built himself. During the year 1908, the corporation chose a girl carrying a heap of wheat as its logo. It was reconstructed after World War II after being completely destroyed by German bombing during the previous war.
Construction of a new production facility in Fara San Martino throughout the 1980s resulted in a twofold increase in output.
De Cecco now distributes sauces, cereals, and other tomato-based goods, in addition to its original offerings.
4) Garofalo
The history of Garofalois is intertwined with the history of Gragnano. Garofalo products are the result of a centuries-old tradition of pasta production, and the highest quality standards are maintained by frequent inspections of both the raw materials and the finished product, as well as through the use of cutting-edge technology. This pasta is notable for its high quality and flavor, as well as for its unusual packaging, which is translucent in appearance. Transparency is a significant value for the organization, which does not disguise the fact that it employs the most up-to-date gear.
The concept behind this is that we want to be able to continue to create pasta in the same way as those artists who came before us and would have delighted to have had machinery to make their jobs simpler and their goods even better.
5) Rummo
Lastly, but certainly not least, Rummo, a tiny pasta plant in Benevento (central Italy), which is one of the few remaining producers of pasta using the traditional, slow-processing method. As a result of this decision, items of exceptional quality, distinguished by their flavor and physical features, are produced. Currently, after 170 years, the old factory in via Dei Mulini has been transformed into a piece of Benevento’s history, serving as a reminder of a historic tradition. Today, Rummo Lenta Lavorazione® is one of the most prestigious pasta brands in Italy, thanks to this long-standing history and six generations of expertise.

I just learned that I could cook a single serving of pasta in my 3-cup rice cooker, something I had previously thought was impossible. Bring on the choirs of angels to sing hallelujah! Having a simple go-to recipe like this is really convenient when you’re trying to pay off credit card debt; all you have to do is toss in whichever frozen vegetable mix is on sale and a splash of dressing, and you’re done!
(I get my protein from eggs and canned tuna/salmon, which are both high in protein.) Anyway, this 8-pack will keep my pantry stocked for a few months (excluding my little gemelli friend, which is my actual favorite but takes longer to prepare), and my grocery budget is a fan of my cooking skills.

- I mean, what’s the harm?
- Yes, without a doubt.
- I don’t eat pasta on a regular basis.
- But, you know, I’ve developed some serious pasta salad skills lately.
- We used to eat Barilla (Tuesday is Prince Spaghetti Day) or Ronzoni, but when we moved to the west coast in the late 1990s, they weren’t available in many sizes or shapes, so we tried a variety of others before deciding on Barilla.
- Local prices vary tremendously, and the nearest food stores are around 40 miles away, so we only shop once a month.
We have at least one box a week, and in the summer, we have two or three boxes a week for cold salads during the week.
While it is unlikely that anyone would be interested in what we eat, we do so because we have never been disappointed with it, and since we don’t have to rinse it while eating it hot.
It is necessary to rinse it before using it for cold salads.

This is most likely the greatest spaghetti you can get for this price.
Did you know that when you eat pasta that is tougher, your digestion is improved?
Penne literally translates as “pen” in Italian, owing to the tube-shaped design with angled ends that was inspired by the quill of an old-fashioned ink pen.
In addition to baked casserole dishes (known as “pasta al forno”), penne is also good on its own.
Because I was born and bred in Italy, I would highly suggest this pasta dish.

On August 24, 2019, a review was conducted in the United States.
In an effort to save money, I decided to purchase in bulk rather than “by-the-box” at the grocery store.
Not yet whipped up anything with them in my kitchen.
These were to be used to supplement my usual supply, which was stored in the pantry.
I just wish that they were the huge elbows, like the ones that I had in my cupboard as a last-minute replacement.
Well, that’s life. Fortunately, it is not the end of the world! At the very least, there’s enough of delicious pasta to be had- (which is more than many others have.) If I have the opportunity, I will modify this review and include a photo.

- You can probably purchase this for the same amount on sale at the grocery store, but this was delivered to my house and I didn’t have to sift through coupons, which sometimes lead to me purchasing food that I didn’t want to eat simply because I had a coupon in my wallet.
- During the first frantic shopping of food, I purchased this item.
- 12 boxes of pasta for less than seven dollars?
- That’s right: absolutely!
- No, spaghetti is not a food that I consume often.
- Nonetheless, I now possess incredible pasta salad skills.
When we were living on the east coast, it was Prince (remember the line.) In the late 1990s, we used to eat Barilla (on Tuesdays, it’s Prince spaghetti day) or Ronzoni, but when we moved to the west, they weren’t accessible in a variety of sizes and shapes, so we tried a variety of others before settling on Prince.
- We rarely buy once a month because the costs in our area are so variable and the grocery stores are roughly 40 miles away.
- The summer months bring at least one box a week, and sometimes two, for cold salads to be enjoyed during the weekday lunch hour.
- While it is unlikely that anyone would be interested in what we eat, we do so because we have never been disappointed with it, and since we don’t need to rinse it when eating it hot.
- However, if we do not add some sauce to the pot or a little more olive oil, the pasta will cling to the bottom of the pot.
- In whatever size or form, we have had no issues with this product, and at roughly $1.40 per piece in shops, purchasing by the case and receiving a discount and free shipping is an easy decision for us.
- Pasta that is most likely the best value for the price.
- Not many people are aware that when you eat spaghetti, it is easier for your stomach to absorb it.

Barilla vs. De Cecco: Which Brand Has Better Pasta? — Home Cook World
If you haven’t heard of Barilla or De Cecco, it’s likely that you haven’t spent much time in the pasta section of your local grocery store. Beyond the fact that they are the world’s largest and third-largest pasta makers, respectively, these two Italian enterprises are multi-generational family businesses with origins dating back to the nineteenth century. In the end, which of the two restaurants serves the superior pasta? In this essay, I’ll attempt to assist you in determining the answer by comparing the extensive pasta product lines offered by Barilla and De Cecco.
So, if I’ve piqued your interest, continue reading.
Barilla and De Cecco are two of the world’s largest producers of pasta, with combined sales of almost $1 billion.
Both brands are regarded as “premium” pastas and are available at most supermarket shops nationwide.
Barilla’s Pasta Range
Thanks to Barilla for the image. Whether it’s the traditional “Classic Blue Box” or the high-end “Collezione” pasta, which I highly recommend to anyone considering Barilla, or the trendy Protein+, Whole Grain, and Organic lines for the health-conscious consumer, Barilla is without a doubt one of the best Italian pasta brands available in grocery stores. Barilla provides 77 different pasta shapes in nine different pasta brands for both professional chefs and household cooks:
- Semolina pasta in 35 different shapes and sizes from the company’s 140-year-old classic Blue Box. a ready pasta product consisting of completely cooked microwavable pasta noodles comprised of wheat, water, and extra virgin olive oil and available in four different forms
- I personally like the bronze-cut pasta shapes with a golden tint and rougher surface that are part of the Collezione (artisanal semolina-flour pasta forms). Made from a gluten-free corn and rice dough mixture, gluten-free pasta is a delicacy. Whole Grain, is a variety of seven pasta forms made entirely of whole-grain flour that each include six grams of fiber per serving
- Protein+noodles manufactured from wheat flour that have been fortified with plant-based protein derived from lentils, chickpeas, and peas
- Veggiepasta prepared with vegetable puree from genuine vegetables, such as tomatoes, carrots, spinach, and zucchini (a excellent method to provide vegetables to children)
- Veggiepasta made with vegetable puree from real vegetables, such as broccoli
- Organic pasta manufactured from durum wheat that has been certified organic by the USDA. Legume, or three different noodle forms made of chickpea and three different noodle shapes made of red lentil
My Barilla Pasta Picks
When it comes to Barilla pasta, I normally go for a product from their “Collezione” line of products. There’s something unique about bronze-cut pasta that you won’t find in any other type of spaghetti noodle. Perhaps it has something to do with the golden color. Alternatively, it might be due to the fact that sauce, whether cream- or tomato-based, adheres better to noodles cut with bronze dies. Simply try one of my favorite recipes and, perhaps, you’ll be as amazed as I was by the difference: This blog is entirely financed by its readers.

Here’s a quick rundown of De Cecco’s pasta offerings:

My De Cecco Pasta Picks
Every type of De Cecco pasta is bronze-cut and manufactured entirely of semolina flour (with the exception of spinach, red lentil, and the rest of the pasta variations in the company’s “Gluten Free” line). They pair beautifully with both cream-based and tomato-based pasta sauces, and they taste nothing short of decadent. Consider include them in a dish for mytagliatelle with tomatoes and anchovies.
Barilla vs. De Cecco Pasta
The bottom line, then, is as follows. What are the differences and similarities between Barilla and De Cecco pasta? It is worth noting that both Barilla and De Cecco are Italian family-run businesses with humble origins that have grown into two of the world’s largest pasta firms. They produce boxed pasta made entirely of semolina flour, and their goods are available at nearly every grocery shop. In comparison to Barilla, which only uses bronze dies to cut its Collezione variety of pasta noodles, De Cecco goes the additional mile and bronze-cuts all of its pasta noodles.

At the end of the day, the type of pasta you eat is all your decision. Food bloggers like me may spend as much time as we want trying to persuade you of the superiority of one brand over another. However, the fact is that both Barilla and De Cecco are family-owned Italian businesses that produce outstanding pasta. Moreover, you will not make a mistake regardless of which one you choose for your home cooking.
Who Is Barilla Owned By?
Your pasta selection is entirely up to you at the end of the day, after all. You may listen to food bloggers like me talk about the advantages of one brand over another for as long as you want. What’s more, both Barilla and De Cecco are family-owned Italian businesses that produce excellent pasta. In addition, you will not make a mistake no matter which one you choose for your home cooking.
Who Owns De Cecco?
De Cecco is an Italian family-owned company that ranks third in the world in terms of pasta production. Nicola and his brother Filippo De Cecco established the “Mill and Pasta Factory of the De Cecco Brothers” in 1886 with the goal of producing the best flour and pasta available in the surrounding region. They were successful. Despite the difficulties, the De Cecco family firm prospered and established a reputation within the community. In 1908, the two brothers designed the distinctive De Cecco logo, which depicted an Italian village girl with two wheat sheaves, which has since become legendary.
As soon as the war was over, the family set about restoring the plant.
De Cecco expanded its Fara San Martino factory with a second facility in 1980, more than doubling the factory’s production capacity.
Since then, De Cecco has expanded its product line to include canned tomatoes, pre-made sauces, gnocchi, and cereals.
De Cecco continues to operate as a private family-owned firm with its headquarters in Fara San Martino, Italy, on Via Filippo De Cecco street. In 2017, the family told Reuters that they were considering putting the company on the Roman stock exchange, which they said was a possibility.
