This is a delicious supper dish that is perfect for enjoying while watching the film Luca. Make a family supper and a movie night out of things.
Because the potato requires a little more cooking time than the pasta, we put it to the pasta water first.

All About The Pasta Water
Don’t forget to set aside part of the pasta cooking water. This will have a significant impact on how well the food and pesto will work together in the end. The pasta water is ideal for tossing, as it allows the cheese in the pesto to melt and stick to the pasta as it is being cooked. Once you’ve mastered the trenette al pesto tips and techniques, it’s time to get down to business and cook. Although a mortar and pestle can be used to make the pesto, you are not need to use one. To combine the ingredients, pulse them in a food processor until smooth.

- 1 pound chicken breast
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil for the pasta. One teaspoon of salt and one tablespoon of olive oil should be used. Once the water begins to boil, add the peeled and diced potato and cook for 4 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside. Toss in the spaghetti. Prepare the green beans according to package directions for 8 minutes. Cook the pasta until it is al dente. Using a mortar and pestle or a food processor, grind the pasta, reserving some pasta water to aid in the blending of the pesto, and put it aside. Combine the one teaspoon salt, basil, garlic, cheeses, 1/2 cup olive oil, and pine nuts in a large mixing bowl. If you are allergic to nuts, simply omit the nuts from the recipe. To thin it down, drizzle in a little more olive oil
- In a serving bowl, combine approximately a third cup pasta water and two generous spoonfuls of pesto
- Toss to combine. Combine the pasta, potatoes, and green beans in a large mixing bowl. Toss thoroughly. Serve

His magnificent animations in Luc are sure to whet the appetite of every viewer.
However, in this film, pasta is the most essential food to consume.

Ingredients 100 g of green beans (or equivalent) (cut into 1 inch pieces) 500 grams of trenette are required (or any pasta you love, linguine, spaghetti, etc) 1 big yellow potato, peeled and diced Pesto alla Genovese (Genovese Pesto) Basil Genovese is a kind of basil that has 45 leaves or 50 grams (round leaves) 2 cloves of garlic, peeled and minced 1 pinch of sea salt (coarse) 2 tablespoons of grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese 2 tbsp.
- grated Pecorino cheese, to taste 1 handful (about 30 g) of pine nuts Extra-virgin olive oil (100 mL) is used.

The film is beautiful, fun, and, because it’s set in Italy, it also features A LOT of amazing-looking food — in particular, a pasta dish called trenette al pesto.

In the movie, Giulia’s dad Massimo makes trenette al pesto for Luca and Alberto, and let’s just say they DEVOURED the heck out of it. So, being the food-in-movies-lover that I am, I decided to try out the recipe. Here’s how it went:

The official ingredient list for trenette al pesto from Disney includes a lot of expected items like the basil and pine nuts for the pesto, but it also has more unique ingredients like green beans and a yellow potato.

I was able to find almost everything on the list at my regular grocery store — the exception being the trenette pasta itself (I have literally never seen this type of pasta in a store before!). But the recipe said I could use linguine instead, so I did my best and opted for some linguine that’s “made in Italy” at least.
Crystal Ro (Courtesy of BuzzFeed) According to reports, trenette is quite similar to linguine, but “slightly thinner and narrower in shape.” Also, so to be clear, I already had coarse salt and extra virgin olive oil on hand.
The first step was making the pesto, starting with the basil, garlic, and salt.

I don’t own a mortar, so I went with the food processor option to blitz up the basil, garlic, and salt.

The recipe called for 100ml of extra virgin olive oil, but pouring an exact amount into my tiny food processor wasn’t very easy, so I just had to eyeball the amount until the ingredients looked like a “very dense cream.”

The recipe called for 500g of the pasta, which as it turned out was the ENTIRE bag. This was the moment I realized this recipe could easily feed a family of four (or more!). So.ya know, take note!

To be honest, I was a little concerned about whether the potato and green beans would be cooked enough (or too much?) when combined with the pasta because it appears that these three components would all ordinarily require a different amount of cooking time. The package of pasta I purchased stated that it should be cooked for 11–13 minutes. I started right in the middle and finished with 12.

I found it interesting that the recipe said to put the pesto in first (with some pasta water), and THEN add the pasta, but it actually worked pretty well! I only wish I’d had a slightly larger mixing bowl, LOL.

I’ll be honest, when I make pesto dishes, I find that they are often either excessively greasy or too salty (possibly because they are generally purchased from a supermarket). However, this handmade, fresh pesto was INCREDIBLY delicious. It included the ideal proportions of all of the elements. Pesto has honestly never tasted better in my whole life. Even though I was concerned that the potato would make this meal feel too “starchy,” it was really a wonderful contrast to the pasta and made the dish feel heartier than it would have been if the dish had only been noodles.
Overall, the trenette al pesto was a refreshing and light summer dish!
Verdict: One very bold *Italian Chef’s Kiss*.

The Perfect Pesto Pasta Recipe
This traditional Italian pesto pasta is quick and easy to prepare while maintaining all of the brilliant herbal tastes, the rich saltiness, and the silky texture that comes from using high-quality olive oil in the preparation. This pesto is so simple to make that you will never need to buy pesto again. Pesto is my favourite comfort meal, and it goes well with just about everything – but today, we’re cooking pasta with it to use it up. As an adult without children, I am not afraid to declare that I am a huge fan of animated films.
And one of my favorite films of the year 2021 thus far has been Luca, a Disney and Pixar production.
The setting.
Any narrative that takes place in Italy and incorporates a significant amount of Italian culture is a surefire winner in my book.
Luca’s arrival is accompanied by a pasta-eating contest and several bowls of pesto spaghetti. This movie made me weep (as is customary with Pixar films) and made me desire pesto at the same time. So pour yourself a huge bowl of this meal, turn on Luca, and relax for the evening a little.
What pasta is good with pesto sauce?
Luca’s pasta dish was trenette al pesto, which is Italian for “pesto pasta.” ‘Trenette’ is a long pasta, comparable to linguine or fettuccine, that is not frequently accessible in the area where I currently reside. Alternatively, if trenette is not available, the following pastas should be substituted: fettuccine (which is what I used), linguine, spaghetti, or bucatini. You may use any ribbed pasta for this recipe, but avoid anything that has fillings (like a tortellini or ravioli.) Pesto should be the star of this show, and it should be.
What do I need to make pesto pasta?
- 1/2 pound pasta of your choosing (I used fettuccine)
- A blender or food processor
- Baking soda
- And salt. Basil leaves that have been freshly picked. As the primary component, you will require a large quantity – but your home will smell lovely as a result of your efforts. Pine Nuts that have been toasted You may also substitute walnuts for the almonds. If you are cooking for a big group of people or for someone who has a nut allergy, panko breadcrumbs are a wonderful alternative. Cheese, grated parmesan or pecorino – I like to use a blend of the two. If you use only pecorino, you will probably not need to add any salt, but it is entirely up to your personal liking. Garlic cloves
- Extra-virgin olive oil of high grade
- Pancetta. The use of this ingredient is entirely optional, however I believe it provides a wonderful crunchy feel to the pasta in this dish. Feel free to omit it or substitute a different meat if you want. Prosciutto might also be an excellent addition. Optional extras – some people prefer to make an extra basil pesto by adding entire leaves at the end so that they wilt in with the pasta
- Others like to add arugula or cherry tomatoes for more color and taste
- Some like to use a combination of the above.
How do I make homemade pesto pasta?
Begin with the spaghetti and pancetta you’ve prepared (if using.) Prepare the pasta by boiling it in a big saucepan with a hefty amount of salt, then draining it and following the package directions. Because this pasta will continue to cook in the same pot as the spaghetti and pancetta, it is best served slightly under al dente. In a separate pan, heat a tiny amount of oil until it is hot but not smoking, then throw in the pancetta and cook until crispy. To see if the oil is heated enough, put a piece of pancetta into the pan and wait for it to sizzle.
- In the meantime, combine the basil, toasted pine nuts, cheese, and garlic cloves in a blender or food processor until well combined and smooth.
- Blend or process until you have a smooth, thick sauce on your hands.
- The pancetta will have shrunk in size and crisped up, as well as released some of its fat into the pan.
- Add a ladle-full of pasta water to the pasta and pancetta, and then stir in the pesto until everything is well-combined.
- Season with salt and pepper if desired.
Tips and Tricks
- The pasta should be removed from its saucepan with tongs, rather than being drained, and placed directly into the pancetta skillet. After you’ve added the pasta and pancetta, add a ladle-full of pasta water and stir it in until everything is well-combined. Toss the pasta in the sauce until it is well coated and a gorgeous green hue. If necessary, season with salt and pepper.

- 1/2 pound pasta
- 2 cups fresh basil
- 3 tablespoons toasted pine nuts
- 3 garlic cloves
- 1/2 cup parmesan or pecorino cheese
- 1/2 cup olive oil
- 4 ounces sliced pancetta
- 1/2 pound pasta
Instructions
- Prepare the pasta according to the package directions. In a pan, heat some olive oil until it shimmers. Once the oil has reached the desired temperature, add the pancetta (if it sizzles, the oil is ready.) Cook until the pieces are smaller and cripsy, and the fat has been released into the pan. While the pasta and pancetta are cooking, combine the basil, pine nuts, garlic cloves, and cheese in a blender or food processor and pulse until finely chopped
- Remove from the blender or food processor and set aside. While the mixer is still running, carefully drizzle in the olive oil. Process the sauce until it is smooth. Using tongs, transfer the cooked pasta to the pan containing the pancetta after it has finished cooking in the pan. The pasta water should not be drained. A ladle full of pasta water should be added to the pan along with the pasta and pancetta. Using your hands, mix everything in the pesto sauce until everything is covered
- Serve as soon as possible

In the third act of Pixar’s new film, Luca, the two sea monster friends at the core of the narrative sit down to supper in the kitchen of a new acquaintance to eat. Plates of pesto-drenched spaghetti slither under the lads’ noses, appearing bright and unctuous and in general delectably tasty (Pixar does food well). I knew I’d be cooking shortly as soon as I laid eyes on it. Trenette al Pesto is a famous Ligurian dish that is served here. It all starts with a basic pesto sauce, which is simple to make but requires a significant amount of effort (particularly if you’re using a mortar and pestle to make it).
So I decided to see if their recipe lived up to the buzz and the visual splendor of the dish depicted in the clip.

The dried linguine ended up being the solution. At the end of the day, everything is pretty much the same as before. I’m also not cooking pasta from scratch since there’s no way a working-class fisherman would spend his evenings making pasta from scratch every night. Italians, like the rest of the world, eat dry spaghetti. The remainder of the process is rather basic. In this dish, I’m using ordinary but excellent cheese, fresh Genovese basil and nice Italian oil, as well as fresh beans and potatoes.

Before putting everything through a strainer, set aside a cup of the pasta water. To make the final meal, combine the pasta, beans, potatoes, and all of the pesto in a large pasta bowl
- Toss to combine. Toss the spaghetti with a little amount of the pasta water to create a creamy pesto sauce
- Serve immediately. Season with a touch of salt to your liking and serve immediately. Prepare the dish right away and garnish with a basil leaf.

It is possible that this content contains affiliate links. It gave me great pleasure to watch and organize a movie night around Disney’s newest release! Currently, I am a huge fan of Italian cuisine, and I can’t wait to share with you all the fun we had with these meals and other activities for Disney’s Luca Movie Night! Because this film is spanking new, there is absolutely nothing available for it! I was thrilled to get the opportunity to design some fantastic items to go along with this film from the ground up.

Because I enjoy Italian cuisine, having a movie night with my family was a lot of fun! Let’s get down to business with the recipes!
Trenette al Pesto – Luca Movie Night Recipe
This incredible recipe was provided to me directly by Pixar themselves! When this movie came out, I was getting ready to prepare my dinner when this lovely dish appeared, straight from the source! I was very excited! Director Enrico Casarosa has prepared a Liruian recipe that he would want to share with us all, and I am thrilled to be able to assist him in sharing it with you. Let’s get this party started! Because the components are mostly measured in grams, I’m going to reprint them below for your convenience: Ingredients
- 1-pound Trenette pasta (or linguine or spaghetti if you can’t locate Trenette)
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil
- 1 large potato
- 1 cup of green beans
- 45 basil leaves
- 1 large onion 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
- 1/4 cup pine nuts
- 2 cloves garlic
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 2 tablespoons Pecorino Romano
- 2 tablespoons Parmesan
- 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
- Using a food processor, puree the basil, garlic, and salt until completely smooth. Combine your Pecorino, Parmesan, and Pine Nuts in a large mixing bowl. Blend until the mixture is smooth. Depending on the consistency of your pesto, you will need to adjust the amount of olive oil you use next. Continue to combine while adding a little amount of olive oil at a time until the pesto has the consistency of thick cream. It’s possible that you won’t need the entire 1/2 cup of olive oil. Bring the water for the pasta to a boil. Once the water has come to a boil, add the pasta, potato, and green beans to the saucepan and cook according to the directions on the pasta box until the pasta is tender. Upon completion of cooking, drain well. Place your pesto in the bottom of a serving dish. Spread the pesto on top of the pasta, potatoes, and green beans, and serve immediately. Mix until the pesto is evenly distributed throughout the noodles. Serve as soon as possible

Ocean Fish Jello – Luca Movie Night Dessert
I couldn’t make up my mind between sweets and nibbles, so I opted for both! The fact that Guilia’s father is a fisherman and that Luca is in charge of all of his family’s fish led me to believe that this would be a wonderful addition to our movie night. For us working parents, this meal couldn’t be much easier to prepare! What you will need to make your Ocean Fish Jello is as follows:
- Blue Raspberry Jello (6oz box)
- 1 carton of Swedish Fish
- Whipped cream
- Swedish Fish Marshmallows
- Glasses to serve your dessert in
- Prepare the Jello according to the package guidelines. (Bring 2 cups of water to a boil, stir for 2 minutes, and then pour in 2 cups of cold water. ) Set aside for 4 hours in the refrigerator after pouring your Jello into the cups you’ve chosen for serving them in. Remove your Jello from the refrigerator and cut a hole in the top of your Jello. Slide a Swedish fish down into the hole and press down until the hole is as deep as you want it to be in the ocean, then repeat the process. (NOTE: If you put the Swedish fish in too early and then try to refrigerate them again, the fish will dissolve into the Jello. Place the fish in the Jello just before serving
- Otherwise, discard it. Finish it up with whipped cream and a Swedish fish marshmallow before serving it.

Gelato – Luca Movie Night Dessert
I was really considering making Gelato when I realized that I could get it at the grocery store for less than $5, which sounded like a good deal to me. If you want to create Gelato, there is a fantastic recipe that I have used in the past that I recommend. Gelato with lemon flavoring that is quite refreshing. Take a look at it here: Lemon Gelato with a Homemade Twist Talenti Gelatos were available at my local Walmart, which I discovered. They are available in a number of different flavors. Because my family is not a huge fan of chocolate, I chose the caramel Cookie Crunch and the Sea Salt Caramel as my dessert options.
Gelato is featured in the film when Luca and Alberto first arrive in town, making this the perfect treat for a movie night in with friends!
Ocean Water – Luca Movie Night Drink
Having in mind that Luca and Alberto were from the sea, I decided to make an ocean cocktail rather than a classic Italian drink in their honor.
Water from the ocean plays a significant role in this film! If the guys are splashed with water, they revert to their previous state as sea monsters. Consequently, we’re paying respect to it with a cocktail tonight. You will need the following ingredients for this recipe:

Luca Crafts and Activities
Using this activity bundle, my daughters had a great time. They had a lot of fun designing and coloring their own Vespa. Luca and his friends are also big fans of coloring, so they had a blast coloring the pages from our Luca Activity Packet! Since this film is so new at the time of writing this, there aren’t any crafts available for it yet. I’ll add them to this list when I come across them.)

- Combine the sugar and water until the sugar is completely dissolved. Coconut extract should be used. Add 2 drops of blue food coloring to a glass of water
- Fill the glass almost to the brim with Sprite. Combine and savor

Directions

To make a dense cream-like consistency, keep adding olive oil until the mixture reaches the consistency of heavy cream. 3. Bring the water for the pasta to a boil. When the water comes to a boil, add some coarse salt. 4. Bring a large saucepan of water to a boil and add the pasta, green beans, and potato.

Lucaon Disney+ was on in the background while I watched with my family yesterday evening. The only thing I can say about this Pixar release is WOW! In the event that you’re planning a movie night with the family, why not plan a supper to go along with it? Over the weekend, the culinary wizards at Pixar turned to social media to share a scrumptious pasta dish with the rest of us.
Now, let’s have a look at the visuals that accompany this great dish: We simply adore all of the graphics that accompany this incredible cuisine! We’ve included all of the necessary information below for those who like to keep the recipe close at hand as they cook.
Trenette Al Pesto
Ingredients:

- Place the basil and garlic in a marble mortar with a pinch of coarse salt and pound until well combined. Begin pounding the basil in the pestle and mortar
- Slowly drizzle in a small amount of oil as you go
- Alternatively, if you do not have a pestle and mortar, you may use a food processor.
- Following that, the pine nuts, grated Parmigiano-Reggiano, and grated Pecorino are added. As you continue to add the olive oil, the consistency should become similar to that of a rich cream. In the event that you’re using a food processor, take careful not to leave it running for too long or the basil may become burnt. It is now necessary to bring the water for the pasta to a boil.
- When the water for the pasta comes to a boil, add a pinch of coarse salt to the saucepan. Tossed into the pasta pot
- Add the green beans and the potato to the saucepan. Once the pasta is done, drain it, but make sure it is somewhat al dente and not too soft.

Trenette al Pesto inspired by Luca — Binging With Babish
Pesto is made up of the following ingredients:
- 15 tablespoons kosher salt
- 1 garlic clove, roughly chopped
- 30 g basil leaves, rinsed and dried
- 30 g olive oil
- 30 g pine nuts, lightly roasted and cooled
- Extra virgin olive oil
- 20 g Parmesan Reggiano, finely grated
- 10 g Pecorino Romano, finely grated
- 80 ml extra virgin olive oil
Trenette al Pesto (Pesto Pasta) Ingredients:
- 500-gram bag of frozen yellow-skin potatoes, peeled
- 150-gram bag of frozen green beans, cleaned and trimmed Pasta (dried): 450 g fettuccine or trenette
- Pesto (see above for recipe)
- Extra virgin olive oil, 3-4 basil leaves, and a pinch of salt and pepper
It is used for: 2Pesto Method:
- Toss the garlic, salt, and pine nuts into a mortar and pestle. Using the pestle and mortar, muddle the ingredients in a circular motion until they form a smooth paste. Toss the basil leaves into the mortar and pestle. Using the pestle, pound the leaves into the garlic paste until they are completely incorporated. If the basil leaves are taking a long time to break down, drizzle in a little olive oil
- Once the basil has broken down, sprinkle in the cheese. Add a tiny quantity of oil at a time, crushing the pesto in between additions, until it is well combined. Adding additional sprinkle of grated cheese to your pesto can prevent it from being too runny. Alternatively, place the garlic, salt, and pine nuts in the bowl of a food processor and pulse until well combined. Pulse until the nuts are finely chopped, about 30 seconds. Combine the basil leaves and the cheeses in a large mixing bowl. While the machine is running, slowly pour in the olive oil. Use immediately or preserve the pesto in an airtight jar for up to a week or more. Remove the pesto from the pan and spread a thin coating of olive oil on top to prevent it from discoloring before replacing the lid. Keep it refrigerated until you’re ready to serve it.

- Prepare a big saucepan of water by bringing it to a boil. Season the water with the kosher salt once it has been boiled
- During this time, dice the potatoes into 1-inch cubes
- Green beans should be cut into 1-inch chunks. As soon as the water comes to a boil, add the potatoes and simmer for 4 minutes. Cook for a further 10-11 minutes, or until the dry fettuccine pasta is al dente, after adding the fresh fettuccine pasta. Green beans should be added in the last 3-4 minutes of cooking time. Reserve approximately 1 cup of the pasta boiling liquid at the end of the cooking process. ** If you are using dried trenette pasta, boil the potatoes for 10 minutes before adding the green beans and cooking for an additional 2 minutes on low heat. Continue to simmer for another 2 minutes after adding the pasta
- Once the pasta, potatoes, and beans are done, drain them. To make the pesto, place everything in a large mixing bowl. Add the drained pasta, potatoes, and beans, as well as around 14 cup of the leftover pasta water. Toss the pasta to ensure that it is well-combined. Finish by drizzling olive oil over the spaghetti and garnishing with more basil leaves.
